Slovakia

 

 

Slovakia has entered the history as a new country on 1st January 1993. It is located in Central Europe, the area is 49 036 sq km and population is more than 5 million people.


Slovakia borders the Czech Republic and Austria to the west, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east and Hungary to the south. Bratislava is the capital.


The official language is Slovak and official currency is euro which has 100 cents



Mountains:

  • High Tatra mountains – are the highest

  • Low Tatra Mountains, Malá Fatra, Veľká Fatra,



Rivers:

  • Danube – the biggest river

  • Váh – the longest river

  • Others: Hron, Torysa, Nitra



Climate:

  • mild, there are warm summers and cold winters in Slovakia

 

 

 

Bratislava

 

 

  • is the capital of the Slovak Republic

  • is the seat of the President, government and parliament

  • is the political, cultural and economic centre of the country

  • is situated on the both banks of the river Danube, near Austrian and Hungarian borders

  • has almost 500,000 inhabitants

  • there are a lot of shopping centres like Aupark, Polus, Avion

 

 

Famous sights:

  • Bratislava Castle - it is a dominant building of the city
  • Michael´s Gateway

  • the Old Town Hall

  • Academia Istropolitana - it was first university and was built by King Mathias Corvinus

  • St Martin´s Cathedral

  • Grasalkovič Palace - is the seat of the President

 

 

Places to visit in Slovakia:

  • Spišský castle - the UNESCO-protected, is the largest castle in Slovakia. There's a museum with weapons.

  • Košice – is the second biggest city in Slovakia

  • High and Low Tatra mountains – visited by the tourists in winter for skiing and in summer for hiking; other mountains to visit: Slovenký Raj, Slovenský Kras, ...

  • Bojnice – Bojnice castle – it is considered to be the most beautiful in central Europe, ZOO, spa


There are a lot of spa towns in Slovakia, e.g. Piešťany, Turčianske Teplice, Trenčianske Teplice, Rajecké Teplice, Bojnice, etc.


There are a lot of caves to visit, e.g. Domica, Demänovská cave, Ochtinská aragonitová cave, Dobšinská ľadová cave, Gombasecká cave, Belianska cave, ...


There are several water reservoirs, e.g. Liptovská Mara, Zemplínska Šírava, Domaša, Duchonka, ...
