Slow-paced arty music which uses the same sort of shuffling drums as hip-hop, but also has a weirder, film-score edge and – this is important – spooky vocals by someone a bit odd. Trip-hoppers are known for being slightly less-than-cheery souls given to singing about all kinds of human misery and unhappiness. Still, this doesn´t stop them making loads of money, buying outrageously expensive trainers and jetting off around the world on tour.

Bjork, Tricky and Portishead are the most famous purveyors of trip-hop. Look out for DJ Shadow, Sneaker Pims and Morcheeba, who´ve had hits too.
