The place where we are born is called a place of birth. It is written on our birth certificate and passport. Our character and behaviour is strongly influenced by the place where we grow up.

The place where we study is usually not identical with our birthplace. These days, many young people choose to study in a different town or country. It allows them to be independent and they can meet new people. On the other hand, some students have financial problems therefore they prefer to stay and study in their hometown.

There are many places in the world where people would like to live or spend their holidays. Some of them prefer pure nature and peaceful countryside, others like hectic life in crowded towns and cities.

A town is larger than a village but smaller than a city. A city consists of residential, industrial and business areas. The majority of city area is taken up by housing. In all major cities skyscrapers, housing estate, business and shopping centres are built and roads and streets are usually well – developed. A global city is the main centre of trade, banking, finance and markets and it has enormous power and influence. There are four traditional global cities - London, New York, Paris and Tokyo. A suburb is a place that is smaller than a town. It is situated on the outskirts of the city and consists of houses and other buildings such as church, school, pub and shops. A village is larger than hamlet (small settlement) and smaller than a town. It is usually found in rural areas outside a town or a city where people live.

During their life people move from place to place from various reasons for example jobs, studies and marriage. Moving is connected with personal and social life and therefore adaptation to a new place may take some time. There are also people who spend all their life in one place because they do not have any social or financial needs to change their home.

We all leave our homes when we travel for holidays. There are many beautiful, surprising, exciting and inspiring places in the world that offer a lot of excitement, possibilities for sightseeing, shopping in luxurious shops, going to restaurants and clubs. The most beautiful cities are Prague, Barcelona, London, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco and others. Those people who look for the exotic and relaxation prefer the Hawaiian Islands. To the most beautiful wild places belong the Antarctica, Amazon, Grand Canyon, Canadian Rockies and Sahara.
