Education
is very important these days. If you want to succeed in our highly-developed
society you need a good education.
·
There
have been some serious changes made in the educational system in Slovakia in
the last few years. The National Curriculum has been changed.
·
School
attendance in Slovakia is compulsory from the age of six to sixteen. Besides
state schools, there are also church schools and private schools. There are several
stages of education: pre-school education, primary education, secondary
education, post-secondary education and higher education.
·
Pre-school
education is voluntary. It includes crèches, kindergartens and special
kindergartens for disabled children.
·
Primary
education is divided into two stages: the first stage with grades 1-4 and the
second stage with grades 5-9. Primary school provides children with a general
education. Pupils study languages, History, Geography, Science, Arts, Religion
or Ethics and Physical Education.
·
The
school year starts on September 1st and finished on June 30th.
Students get school reports at the end of January and June and are assessed by
marks from 1 to 5 (one is the best, five is the worst). If a student gets a 5
in June, he can take a make-up exam to try once again to pass.
·
When
children finish primary school, they can choose what type of secondary school
they want to attend for the next four years. There are different types of
secondary schools in Slovakia: Grammar Schools and various kinds of vocational
and technical schools.
·
Vocational
and technical schools for example agricultural, nursing, business and hotel
academies our secondary vocation school of trade and services etc. The schools
prepare students for their future professions but they also offer a general
secondary. 3-year secondary vocational schools prepare students for practical
jobs. Students graduate after passing final examinations in both theoretical
and practical subjects.
·
Grammar
school prepares students for universities.
Studies take four years and are finished with a school-leaving
examination.
-School
leaving examination consists of 2 parts: **written test – checks our knowledge
and skills in listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar and
vocabulary. Students also write an essay on a topic chosen by the Minister of
education and published on the Internet 20 minutes before the test. **oral test
– oral examination in based on 25 themes and a student must chose one of 30
topics/papers. And oral exam lasts for 20 minutes and consists of 3 parts. In
the first one some pictures are compared and described. We talk for 5 minutes.
The second part lasts for 10 minutes and we an answer the question from the

special subjects such as Accounting, Economics, Geography and Tourism,
Marketing and Management.
·
Students
who successfully pass the examination receive their school-leaving certificate
and can apply for studies at universities and colleges.
·
Post-secondary
education is a new trend in professional education, specialising in such fields
of study as accounting, information processing, computer technology, tourism
and entrepreneurship.
·
Higher
education lasts from 4 to 6 years and is provided by colleges and universities.
Students have to pass an entrance examination to be admitted to university
where they can study everything from law, medicine, economics and journalism to
agriculture, engineering, drama and fine art.
·
Our
school consists of 3 buildings. We have a playground, a gym and sports facilities
like tennis court. On the ground floor of the main building there are usually
lockers, the school canteen, a small snackbar where students can buy
refreshments during breaks, the staff room, the headmaster`s and his deportees’
offices. In the building, there are mostly large classrooms with large windows,
several small classrooms and special classrooms called laboratories for
teaching IT, Chemistry, Languages and Geography. Hallways and staircases are
decorated with flowers and pictures of famous people. There are also
notice-boards with important information for students.
·
Classes
start at 8am and usually finish at 2:20pm. A lesson usually lasts 45 minutes
and breaks are usually 10 or 15 minutes long. Apart from lessons, many schools
offer various after-school activities for students, like sports, drama,
photography and hiking.
·
A
traditional uniform consists of a shirt, tie, blazer with a school badge on the
pocket and a dark skirt for girls or dark trousers for boys.
