But, although, however

 

- tieto spojky nám spájajú dve vety, medzi ktorými je kontrast


But - ale


The café was crowded, but we found a table. (Kaviareň bola preplnená, ale našli sme stôl.)

 

Although - hoci


Although the café was crowded, we found a table.

 

alebo veta s although môže mať aj vymenené vety:

 

We found a table, although the café was crowded.


However – jednako, avšak, je trochu formálnejšie


The new system was more supposed to be more efficient. However, in practice it caused chaos./In practice, however, it caused chaos. (Predpokladalo sa, že nový systém bude efektívnejší. Hoci v praxi to spôsobilo chaos.)



 

Though, even though


Though - znamená to isté ako although, ale je neformálne


Thought/Although I liked the sweater, I decided not to buy it. (Hoci sa mi ten sveter páčil, nekúpila som si ho.)


- thought môžeme použiť aj na konci vety


I liked the sweater. I decided not to buy it, though.


Even though – má ten istý význam ale je empatickejšie a silnejšie ako though


Matthew looked quite fresh, even though he´d been playing squash. (Matthew vyzerá celkom sviežo hoci hral squash.)

 

Even though you dislike Jessica, you shoud try to be nice to her. (Hoci nemáš rád Jessicu mal by si sa snažiť byť k nej milý.)



 

In spite of, despite – hoci, navzdory


In spite of a despite používame pred podstatnými menami a slovesom s príponou –ing

 

Kitty wanted to report on the war in spite of the danger. (Kitty chcela robiť reportáž o vojne navzdory nebezpečenstvu.)

 

Mark went on working in spite of feeling unwell. (Mark išiel pracovať navzdory tomu, že sa necítil dobre.)

 

She wanted to go despite the danger.

 

He went on working despite feeling unwell.


 

Rozdiel medzi although a in spite of


in spite of

although

- nasleduje po ňom podstatné meno alebo sloveso s príponou –ing


I´m no better in spite of the pills.


Laura wants to fly in spite of feeling afraid.


NIE!

Laura wants to fly in spite of she feels afraid.

 - nasleduje po ňom clause (veta)



I´m no better, although I´ve taken the pills.


Laura wants to fly, although she feels afraid.


NIE!

Laura wants to fly, although her fear.


 

Pokiaľ by sme chceli použiť in spite of s clause (vetou), použijeme to nasledovne:


I´m no better in spite of the fact that I´ve taken the pills.



 

Whereas, while, on the other hand


Whereas – zatiaľ čo, kým

While – pokým, kým

On the other hand– na druhej strane


- tieto spojky používame na vyjadrenie porovnania medzi dvoma myšlienkami


United are top of the league, whereas City are bottom. (United sú na vrchole ligy, zatiaľ čo City sú na chvoste tabuľky.)

 

Yesterday it was freezing cold, while today it´s quite warm. (Včera mrzlo, kým dnes je celkom teplo.)

 

The flat is conveniently located. On the other hand, there´s a lot of noise from the traffic. (Byt je vhodne umiestnený. Na druhej strane je tu veľa hluku z dopravy.)


alebo ho môžeme vložiť do vety:

 

There is, on the other hand, a lot of noise from the traffic.


Niekedy môžeme namiesto whereas použiť but:


The red pills make me feel sick, but/whereas the blue ones don´t. (Z červených tabletiek mi je zle, ale/kým z modrých nie.)
