To, in order to, so that a for používame na vyjadrenie dôvodu, aby sme povedali prečo robíme veci.

V použitom príklade je hneď niekoľko dôvodov na zastavenie: kúpiť noviny, vystrieť si nohy, natankovať benzín.

to neurčitok môžeme používať na vyjadrenie dôvodu

 

napr.

Melanie was hurrying to catch her bus. (... ponáhľala sa aby chytila vlak)

Most people work to earn money. (... pracujú aby zarobili)

I rang to find out the train times. (... zavolal som aby som zistil odchody vlakov)

We went to the library to get some books. (... išli sme do knižnice aby sme si požičali nejaké knihy)


 

 

in order to, so as to

 

- sú formálnejšie ako to neurčitok

 

napr.

The government took these measures in order to reduce crime. (Vláda prijala opatrenia aby redukovala zločin.)

The staff are working at weekends so as to complete the project in time. (Zamestnanci pracujú cez víkendy aby dokončili projekt včas.)


- môžeme ich použiť aj v zápore

 

in order not to

 

Melanie was hurrying in order not to miss the bus. (... ponáhľala sa aby nezmeškala autobus)

 

 

so as not to

 

The staff are working at weekends so as not to delay the project. (... pracujú cez víkendy aby nemeškali s projektom.)


 

 

Pozor!

 

- nemôžeme používať not tosamotné

 

She was hurrying to catch her bus. (She was hurrying not to miss her bus.)


 

 

so that

 

- za so that musí nasledovať podmet a prísudok

 

napr.

I´ll post the card today so that it gets there on Daniel´s birthday.

 

 

- často používame will alebo can pre dôvod v prítomnom čase a would alebo could pre dôvod v minulom čase

 

napr.

I´ll give you a map so that you can find/you´ll find the way all right. – prítomný čas

I gave Nick a map so that he could find/would be able to find the way all right. – minulý čas


 

 

to a for

 

- for používame s podstatným menom, aby sme povedali prečo niečo robíme

 

napr.

The whole family have gone out for a bike ride.

Why don´t you come over for coffee?


 

- keď hovoríme o dôvode nejakej veci, môžeme použiť to neurčitok alebo for + ing formu

 

napr.

This heater is to keep/for keeping the plants warm in winter.

This machine is used to cut/for cutting plastic.


 

Pozor!

- nesmieme používať for + ing formu, keď hovoríme o konkrétnej situácii

 

I put the heater on to keep the plants warm. (I put the heater on for keeping the plants warm.)
